International Institute of Research on Medical Migration

The International Institute of Research on Medical Migration is funded by its members and by MCD International, manager of MIGMED, the Canadian health and wellness site, specialist of medical tourism.

The Institute is a Resource Integration Network linked to the research and understanding of all temporary, semi-permanent or permanent migration phenomenon for medical and/or well-being reasons, both at the level of patients or their accompanist and the medical workforce.

It is mainly through its website that this integration will support private and public organizations involved in the development of knowledge in this field and will serve as a focal point for the presentation of research in the field of medical migration.

The IIRMM also has a mandate to produce informative reports and statistics on medical tourism (inbound, outbound and domestic) and information on direct and indirect benefits.

Main themes to be addressed by IIRMM:

  • Definitions for framing the phenomenon of medical migration: temporary, semi-permanent, local, regional, international, medical tourism, medical migration of patients, medical migration of the workforce, globalization of pathologies, etc.;
  • Current information and statistics on medical migration;
  • Information and statistics currently available in relation to the specific field of medical tourism;
  • Presentation of different studies related to medical migration and medical tourism.

In addition, IIRMM is working to establish supra-national patient treatment agreements and waiting list management, like it exists in other field such as economic partnerships, taxation or in other areas.

“Universal health coverage, with full access to high-quality services for health promotion, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, palliation and financial risk protection, cannot be achieved without evidence from research. Research has the power to address a wide range of questions about how we can reach universal coverage, providing answers to improve human health, well-being and development.”
